Dr. Segun Salami’s interest in the field of medicine started as a young boy in Ibadan, Nigeria. He was inspired by his mother, who worked as a nurse as well as a health care officer. She worked tirelessly to educate and equip women with medical knowledge needed to care for themselves and their families.
His desire to become a medical doctor was further reinforced by the bout of frontal sinusitis he had as a teenage boy. The severe headache was due to a strain of bacteria that was resistant to all the antibiotics readily available at the local pharmacies. Fortunately, a visiting doctor from the United States had some of the newer generation of these antibiotics with him. These more potent antibiotics successfully took care of Olusegun.
Olusegun Salami excelled in the sciences while in secondary school at Government College Ibadan, Nigeria. He won several awards for being the top student in both Biology and Chemistry. He attended the University of Ibadan, Nigeria briefly before eventually transferring to Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA to complete his pre-medical education.
Upon graduating from Rutgers University, Dr Salami worked as a scientist with Novartis Pharmaceuticals, one of the largest Pharmaceutical companies in the world. He worked in the quality control department where he ensured that medications had exact amounts of active ingredients and were free of impurities.
After a year with Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Dr Salami enrolled at Temple University School of Medicine, Pennsylvania, USA, where he received his medical degree. An Anesthesiology residency followed this at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, USA. He completed his medical training with a Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology fellowship at Emory School of Medicine, Georgia USA.
Dr. Salami is a board-certified Anesthesiologist with almost 20 years of clinical experience. He holds membership in several organizations including the American Society of Anesthesiologist and American Medical Association.
